Background[]
Early life[]
Max Payne was born in the 1960s, to Jack and Helen Payne. Jack was a war veteran who suffered from a post traumatic stress disorder. Jack tried to "toughen up" Max which Helen was against. Helen was an alcoholic woman, who was abused by her husband. Her father, Max' maternal grandfather, had an important influence on the boy. He would tell the child mythical stories and comfort him in times of pain.
In 1976, Helen died, possibly because of her husband, who was cheating on her. After her funeral, Max saw Jack and his lover, Cheryl, in the kitchen, and confronted them with a toy revolver. In 1979, three years later, Jack died too, and was buried next to his wife.
Adult life[]
Sometime during the early 1990's, Max joined NYPD. Around that time, he met Alex Balder, and the two became partners and best friends. The two investigated cases related to the Punchinello crime family, with one time involved spying upon the family's mobsters; Alex was caught and held in gunshot by one of the criminal, only to be saved by Max when the latter leaped over the mobsters and gunned them down.
At some point later, Alex moved into the DEA, though the two reminded close friends and often worked together. Around the same time, Max was under the wing of the future Deputy Chief Jim Bravura, then an Inspector. Max was partnered - for a short time - with female detective Valerie Winterson to capture a murderer.
During the mid 1990's, Max saved a young woman who worked at the D.A. office called Michelle, from two robbers. The two fell in love with each other, married six months later, and their child, a girl named Rose, was born nine months later.
